Water Policy

1. Legal Context

For Licensed Premises (Bowling & Sk8ters):

Under The Licensing Act 2003, as amended by the Live Music Act 2012, premises licensed to sell alcohol must provide free potable (drinkable) tap water on request. This is a mandatory licensing condition for all premises authorized to sell alcohol for consumption on the premises.

  • Legal Reference:

    • Licensing Act 2003 (Mandatory Licensing Conditions) Order 2010, amended in 2014

    • Condition 4: “The responsible person must ensure that free potable water is provided on request to customers where it is reasonably available.”

For Non-Licensed Premises (Monkey Puzzle):

There is no legal obligation to supply free tap water unless alcohol is being served. Venues like Monkey Puzzle, which do not serve alcohol, are not legally required to provide drinking water to customers.

2. Charging Policy for Utensils and Service

While tap water itself must be free of charge in licensed premises, the law does not prohibit charging for:

  • Cups or glasses (especially if using compostable, branded, or takeaway)

  • Table service

  • Use of cutlery or additional amenities not related to the drink itself

As clarified in various guidance and local licensing interpretations, charges may be applied for the service or utensils, but the water must remain free.

Parking Policy

Madison Heights provides limited on-site parking for the convenience of its guests. By entering or using our car park, you agree to the following terms:

Private Property Use

  • The Madison Heights car park is private property.
  • Parking is strictly for customers and guests using Madison Heights facilities.
  • Use of the car park for access to other destinations such as Promenade Park is not permitted unless prior written consent has been given by management.
  • A parking fee may apply for non-customer use if agreed in advance.

Unauthorised Use

  • Vehicles not associated with Madison Heights may be clamped or removed at the owner’s expense.
  • Unauthorised use may result in a parking charge or refusal of future access.

Availability

  • Parking spaces are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • We cannot guarantee availability and do not offer pre-allocated spaces.
  • We make every effort to accommodate party and event bookings, but space remains limited.

Important Notices

  • All vehicles must be parked within marked bays.
  • Madison Heights accepts no responsibility for loss, theft, or damage to vehicles or personal items.
  • Vehicles that obstruct access or present a hazard may be clamped or towed without notice.

Need Event Parking or Third-Party Access?

If you are hosting an external event or require access to the car park for non-Madison Heights purposes, please contact us in advance to request permission and discuss any applicable fees.

Additional Parking

Addition parking can be found at the Maldon Tiptree football club on non game/event days for free.

parking is also available at Maldon promenade park additional fees apply.

Loyalty Card Data Collection Policy

Sk8ters Roller Rink – Admission & Conduct Policy

To ensure the safety, enjoyment, and smooth running of Sk8ters Roller Rink, the following rules and conditions apply to all visitors, whether skating or spectating.

General Admission Rules

Spectator Admission

  • All spectators must pay an admittance fee, even if not skating. This helps us manage venue capacity and ensure everyone’s safety.

Mobile Phone & Rink Entry Policy

Use of Mobile Phones on the Rink

Mobile phones may be used on the skating rink for recording video and taking photographs only.

The following are not permitted while on the rink:

  • Text messaging

  • Phone calls

  • Social media scrolling

  • Distracted phone use of any kind

This is to ensure the safety of all skaters and to reduce collision risk.

Any attendee using a mobile phone in a manner that creates a safety hazard may be instructed to leave the rink immediately.


Selfie Sticks & Accessories

The use of selfie sticks, tripods, or extended recording devices is strictly prohibited anywhere on the rink.

This rule is in place to prevent:

  • Injury to other skaters

  • Obstruction of movement

  • Damage to equipment

  • Increased collision risk

  • Intrusive recording

Failure to comply may result in removal from the rink or refusal of entry.


Rink Entry Requirements

The skating rink may only be entered while wearing roller skates.

The following are strictly prohibited on the rink surface:

  • Trainers or shoes

  • Bare feet

  • Socks without skates

  • Any non-skating footwear

This is for safety, hygiene, and surface protection reasons.

Any individual attempting to enter the rink without skates will be instructed to leave the rink immediately.


Skates & Safety Acknowledgement

The very nature of roller skating carries the risk of slip trips and falls, by admittance you have excepted these risks and understand that Madison Heights hold no responsibilities for any injury’s incurred during skating. 

Skate Hire

  • Skate hire is free with paid admission.
  • Skates are serviced on a regular basis.
  • All damages should be reported to A MEMBER OF STAFF.
  • Do not attempt to modify or repair rental skates.

Personal Skates

  • All personal skates must be inspected by a member of staff before being used on the rink.
  • Skates that do not meet our safety standards will not be permitted.
  • We reserve the right to retain non-approved skates until the end of the session to ensure they are not used unsafely.

Dress Code Policy

Sk8ters Roller Rink operates as a family entertainment venue. All attendees are expected to dress in a manner appropriate for a family-oriented environment.

Hoodies & Head Coverings

Hooded clothing may be worn; however:

  • Hoods must not be worn up while inside the venue.

  • Staff may request that hoods be lowered or removed.

This requirement supports:

  • Venue security,

  • Clear CCTV identification,

  • Reduction of intimidation factors,

  • The overall comfort and safety of guests.

Failure to comply with a reasonable staff request may result in refusal of entry or removal from the premises.


Appropriate Clothing

Clothing must be suitable for a family environment.

The following may be deemed inappropriate:

  • Overly revealing or provocative clothing

  • Clothing exposing excessive amounts of skin

  • Clothing displaying offensive, abusive, or inappropriate language or imagery

Senior staff reserve the right to determine whether clothing is appropriate. Guests may be asked to adjust or change clothing where possible, or may be refused entry if attire is considered unsuitable.

Sk8ters reserves the right to refuse admission in line with this policy.

Behaviour & Conduct

Respect and Safety

  • Sk8ters staff and stewards have the right to approach, warn, or instruct any guest not following safety rules or behaving inappropriately.
  • Failure to comply with instructions or continued disruptive behaviour may result in removal from the premises or a permanent ban.
  • Abuse towards staff will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Additional Rink Rules

  • No outside food or drink is allowed inside Sk8ters or anywhere within the Madison Heights building, and will be removed if found.
  • Only stewards, DJs, or staff may change the direction of the rink during public sessions.
  • High-visibility vests are reserved for authorised Sk8ters stewards unless otherwise approved by management.
  • Whistles are limited to staff use only for safety and crowd control.

Damages & Liability

  • We reserve the right to pursue compensation and take legal action for any damage caused to the premises, equipment, or fixtures resulting from malicious, reckless, or intentional acts.

Sk8ters Roller Rink – Unattended Children & Young Persons Policy

Madison Heights

1. Policy Statement

Sk8ters Roller Rink at Madison Heights is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people in accordance with UK safeguarding legislation, including the Children Act 1989 and 2004 and statutory guidance “Working Together to Safeguard Children.”

The safety and welfare of children is our highest priority. This policy outlines the requirements for supervision, parental responsibility, and procedures for managing unattended children and young persons.


Section 1: Children Under 14 Years of Age

1.1 Mandatory Parental Supervision

  • Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at all times.

  • The parent/guardian must remain inside Sk8ters Roller Rink premises for the full duration of the visit.

  • Parents may temporarily leave the building (e.g., for smoking or vaping) provided:

    • The absence does not exceed 10 minutes, and

    • They remain contactable and immediately available to return.

Sk8ters Roller Rink is not responsible for supervising children under 14 in place of a parent or guardian.


1.2 If a Child Under 14 is Found Unattended

If a child under 14 is identified as being left unattended:

  1. The child will be immediately removed from the skating rink for safety.

  2. Skates will be removed.

  3. The child will be seated in a safe, worked area where they can be monitored by a senior members of staff.

  4. During busier periods, and where space is limited, the child may be relocated to the downstairs restaurant area where:

    • CCTV coverage is active,

    • Senior staff are present.

The child will be required to contact a parent/guardian to return immediately.

If:

  • A parent/guardian cannot be contacted,

  • Or refuses to return,

  • Or fails to collect the child within a reasonable timeframe,

Sk8ters will escalate the matter to:

  • The appropriate safeguarding authorities, and/or

  • The Police.

This is in line with our safeguarding responsibilities.


1.3 Refund Policy (Under 14)

Clear signage and booking information state that a parent must remain on site.

If a parent leaves a child unattended:

  • No refund will be provided.

  • Sk8ters holds no responsibility for a parent choosing to leave the premises.

All reasonable preventative measures are in place to ensure parents understand this requirement.


Section 2: Young Persons Aged 14–16

2.1 Attendance Without Parent – 14+ Card Requirement

Young persons aged 14 to 16 may attend Sk8ters without a parent present only if:

  • A completed and approved 14+ Consent Form is on file.

  • The form includes:

    • Full name and date of birth

    • At least one parent/guardian contact number

    • Emergency contact details

    • A clear and up-to-date image of a passport (preferred) or birth certificate.

      • An image of the child alone is not acceptable.

Forms missing required documentation will:

  • Be deleted, and

  • Not be accepted.


2.2 Verification and Random Checks

Sk8ters reserves the right to:

  • Cross-check provided information.

  • Ask attendees questions relating to:

    • Age,

    • Parent/guardian contact details,

    • Address,

    • Other identifying information.

If:

  • Information does not match records,

  • Or misinformation is suspected,

The 14+ card will be immediately suspended.

To reinstate:

  • A passport (preferred) or birth certificate must be presented in person.

  • The card will remain barred until verification is complete.


2.3 Document Storage

Where copies of passports or birth certificates are held:

  • They will be stored securely.

  • Access will be restricted to senior management.

  • Documents will only be retained for safeguarding verification purposes.

  • Storage and retention will comply with UK data protection legislation (UK GDPR & Data Protection Act 2018).


Section 3: 14–16 Year Olds Arriving Without 14+ Card

If a 14–16 year old arrives:

With a Parent But No 14+ Card:

  • The parent must remain on site at all times.

  • Temporary absence (smoking/vaping) must not exceed 10 minutes.

Without a Parent and Without a 14+ Card:

  • They will not be permitted to skate.

  • They will be asked to:

    • Remove skates (if issued),

    • Sit in a supervised area,

    • Or relocate downstairs to the restaurant area if necessary.

They must:

  • Contact a parent to attend and supervise,

  • Or be collected.

Alternatively:

  • A completed consent form and passport/birth certificate may be presented in person for verification.

Failure to comply will result in refusal of entry.


Section 3.1: 17 Year Olds 

17 year olds do not require a 14+ membership to stay without parents, but are required to prove age on attendance either from:

  • Valid current passport.
  • provisional/ driving license.

General rink rules apply.

Section 4: Unacceptable Behaviour & Conduct

Any attendee (including 14–16 year olds) displaying:

  • Aggressive behaviour,

  • Bullying,

  • Harassment,

  • Unsafe skating,

  • Abusive language,

  • Disruptive conduct,

May be required to present their 14+ card or identification.

Sk8ters reserves the right, at the discretion of senior management, to:

  • Issue a warning,

  • Remove the skater from the rink,

  • Suspend their card,

  • Impose a temporary ban (1 day or more),

  • Issue a lifetime ban.


4.1 Aggressive Communication & Harassment

Sk8ters Roller Rink maintains a zero-tolerance approach to aggression, harassment, or abusive behaviour directed toward staff, management, or the business.

This includes behaviour conducted:

  • In person within the building

  • By telephone

  • By email

  • Via social media

  • Through messaging platforms

  • Through third parties

  • Or by any other method of communication

Any communication that is:

  • Threatening

  • Abusive

  • Harassing

  • Intimidating

  • Defamatory

  • Aggressive in tone or content

Will be formally recorded and may result in:

  • Immediate termination of membership or skating privileges

  • Temporary or permanent ban from Sk8ters Roller Rink

  • Refusal of entry to Madison Heights premises

Where behaviour is deemed threatening, malicious, or criminal in nature, it will be reported to the Police without further warning.

CCTV footage, written records, call logs, email records, and digital communications may be preserved and provided to law enforcement as evidence.

Sk8ters Roller Rink operates under a duty of care to protect its staff from harassment and abuse under UK law, including the Protection from Harassment Act 1997 and related legislation.

All decisions are made in the interest of safety and safeguarding.

Section 5: Safeguarding Escalation

Where safeguarding concerns arise, including:

  • Repeated abandonment,

  • Inability to contact parents and/or guardians,

  • Risk of harm,

  • Vulnerability concerns,

Sk8ters will contact:

  • The Police, and/or

  • The appropriate local safeguarding authority.

All incidents will be recorded in the safeguarding log.


Section 6: CCTV & Monitoring

Sk8ters operates CCTV throughout the premises for safety and safeguarding purposes.

Children seated while awaiting collection will remain in areas covered by CCTV and supervised by senior staff.


Section 7: Roller Skate Usage & Restricted Areas

7.1 Designated Skate Area

The wearing of roller skates is strictly limited to the designated Sk8ters Roller Rink area only.

Roller skates must not be worn anywhere else within the Madison Heights building, including but not limited to:

  • Stairways

  • Lifts

  • Corridors

  • Reception areas

  • Restaurant areas

  • Toilets

  • External walkways

This rule is in place to ensure the safety of skaters, staff, and members of the public.


7.2 Staff Instruction

If a member of staff instructs an attendee to remove their skates because they are being worn outside of the designated rink area:

  • The skates must be removed immediately.

  • Failure to comply with a reasonable staff instruction may result in:

    • Immediate removal from the premises,

    • Suspension of skating privileges,

    • Or a ban at the discretion of senior management.

All staff decisions are made in the interest of public safety and liability prevention.


Section 8: Zero Tolerance – Drugs & Substance Misuse

Sk8ters Roller Rink operates a strict zero-tolerance policy regarding drugs and illegal substances.

8.1 Possession

Any individual found to be:

  • In possession of illegal drugs,

  • Supplying illegal substances,

  • Attempting to distribute illegal substances,

Will:

  • Be required to leave the premises immediately,

  • Receive an instant ban from Sk8ters Roller Rink.


8.2 Being Under the Influence

Any individual believed to be:

  • Under the influence of illegal drugs,

  • Behaving in a manner consistent with substance misuse,

  • Presenting a risk to themselves or others due to intoxication,

Will:

  • Be removed from the premises immediately,

  • Receive an instant ban.


8.3 Refusal to Leave

If an individual refuses to leave when instructed under this policy:

  • The Police will be contacted immediately.

  • CCTV footage will be preserved and handed to the Police.

CCTV evidence will be provided under both scenarios:

  • Possession

  • Being under the influence

Sk8ters fully cooperates with law enforcement authorities.


Policy Enforcement

This policy is strictly enforced.

Entry to Sk8ters constitutes agreement to comply with these supervision and safeguarding requirements.

Failure to comply may result in:

  • Refusal of entry,

  • Removal from premises,

  • Suspension of membership,

  • Permanent exclusion.

This policy is strictly enforced to protect:

  • Children and young persons,

  • Staff,

  • Members of the public,

  • The reputation and licensing conditions of Madison Heights.

Entry to Sk8ters constitutes acceptance of these rules.

Monkey Puzzle - Admission & Conduct Policy

At Monkey Puzzle, your child’s safety and enjoyment are our top priorities. Please review the following terms before entering the play area.

Admission & Play Session

  • Admission grants 2 hours of playtime per paying child.
  • Late arrivals will still be charged full price, even if the full 2-hour session cannot be used.
  • Extensions may be offered at management discretion.
  • During school holidays, an additional 2 hours will need to be purchased.
  • During term time, the 2-hour rule is relaxed where possible.

Height & Age Restrictions

  • The play area is designed for children under 5 feet 3 inches (160 cm) in height.
  • This height restriction applies to anyone under the age of 18.
  • Adults (18+) may accompany children but must play responsibly to ensure the safety of both themselves and smaller children.

Footwear & Clothing

  • Socks must be worn at all times by anyone using the play equipment.
  • Shoes of any kind are not permitted on any part of the play structure, including by supervising adults.

Under 5s Area

  • The Under 5s zone is strictly for children under 5 years old.
  • Adults are permitted to supervise their children in this area at all times.
  • Siblings over the age limit are not allowed to enter this space, even with supervision, as this may encourage unsafe behaviour.
  • Please note: the Under 5s area is strictly for children aged under 5 years based on actual age (from birth), not developmental or mental age.

Supervision Requirements

  • Children must be supervised by a responsible adult at all times.
  • No child may be left unattended, and parents must not leave the premises or enter other areas of Madison Heights without their child.
  • Staff are not responsible for child supervision.
  • If an unsupervised child is identified, efforts will be made to ensure their safety, but parents remain fully accountable.

Safety Measures & Checks

  • The premises are fitted with auto-closing doors, magnetic locks, and alarm systems for safety.
  • Despite precautions, unsupervised children may still attempt to leave, so active supervision is essential.
  • Daily safety checks are performed at opening and closing.
  • More detailed inspections take place at least twice per week.
  • Report any safety concerns immediately to a member of staff.
  • We reserve the right to close Monkey Puzzle without notice due to safety or maintenance issues.

Food, Drink & Tap Water

  • No outside food or drink is permitted.
  • Only items purchased from Madison Heights may be consumed on the premises.
  • Due to Monkey Puzzle not serving alcohol we are not legally required to provide free tap water we offer bottled water or jugs of water/ juice for a reasonable fee. 

Behaviour & Concerns

  • Please report any unsafe behaviour, poor supervision, or rude conduct to a staff member immediately.
  • Do not attempt to resolve issues yourself — our trained team will handle the situation professionally.

Damages & Liability

  • We reserve the right to pursue compensation and take legal action for any damage caused to the premises, equipment, or fixtures resulting from malicious or intentional acts.

Madison Lane Bowling - Admission & Conduct Policy

To ensure a safe, enjoyable, and fair experience at Madison Lane Bowling, the following rules and guidelines apply to all guests.</p.

Bowling Shoes & Attire

  • Bowling shoes are required for all guests when using the lanes.
  • Our hire shoes are made from synthetic leather and are cleaned after every use with an approved disinfectant.
  • Socks must be worn when using hire shoes for hygiene and safety reasons.
  • Guests may wear their own personal bowling shoes, but these must be pre-approved by Madison Lane. Please contact us in advance to avoid disappointment.

Lane Use & Safety

  • Do not attempt to fix, adjust, or alter the lanes under any circumstance. Please report any issues to a member of staff immediately.
  • Only Madison Lane staff are permitted to cross the foul line or enter the lane backend area.
  • Trapped balls or personal items that cross the foul line will be recovered by a member of staff only.

Equipment & Ball Use

  • We aim to provide each guest with a bowling ball of suitable weight and finger hole size. During busy periods, availability may be limited.
  • Personal bowling balls are allowed but must be in good, sound condition.
  • We maintain our equipment and machinery to the highest possible standards through routine checks and servicing.
  • If you believe your personal equipment has been damaged during play, please report it to management so a suitable solution can be discussed.

Lane Breakdowns & Session Interruptions

  • While rare, lane breakdowns do occur. We will always do our best to resolve issues quickly and keep you informed.
  • During busy times, repair delays may happen. If we cannot resolve the issue during your session, a rebooking or refund may be offered at our discretion.

Food, Drink & Tap Water

  • No outside food or drink is allowed within the bowling area or anywhere in the Madison Heights building.
  • Only food and drinks purchased from Madison Heights are permitted.

Damages & Liability

  • We reserve the right to pursue compensation and take legal action for any damage to the lanes, machinery, fixtures, or equipment caused by malicious or negligent acts.
  • Guests are responsible for the condition and safe use of their personal equipment while at Madison Lane.

Policy Regarding Lost or Stolen Personal Property

Purpose

This policy outlines Madison Heights’ position on the loss, theft, or damage of personal property on our premises or during official Madison Heights events.

Policy Statement

Madison Heights is not liable for any personal belongings that are lost, stolen, or damaged while on company property or at company-hosted events. This includes, but is not limited to, the following areas:

  • Bowling alley, roller rink, soft play, arcade, and other venues within Madison Heights
  • Car parks, corridors, party rooms, changing areas, and communal areas
  • Off-site locations during Madison Heights-sponsored events

The policy applies to items such as:

  • Wallets, purses, and handbags
  • Mobile phones, tablets, and laptops
  • Jewelry and watches
  • Keys
  • Clothing and personal accessories
  • Personal vehicles and their contents
  • Any other personal items brought onto the premises or to events

Rationale

Madison Heights takes reasonable steps to provide a safe and secure environment. However, we cannot guarantee the safety of personal belongings. Individuals are responsible for safeguarding their own property at all times.

Recommendations

  • Do not leave personal belongings unattended
  • Keep valuables out of sight
  • Record serial numbers of electronic devices
  • Consider purchasing personal property insurance
  • Report any suspicious activity to staff or security immediately
  • Avoid bringing unnecessary valuables to the premises

Reporting a Loss or Theft

While Madison Heights is not responsible for lost or stolen property, we encourage guests to report incidents to a staff member for documentation purposes. This may help us identify patterns or enhance future security.
Note: It is the sole responsibility of the item’s owner to report thefts to the police.

Exceptions

This policy does not apply to company-issued equipment or property, which is covered under separate procedures.
